A group of 35 students along with their faculty from Bharti Vidyapeeth College Of Architecture, Navi Mumabi under their summer workshops program visited Kaaya to study different architectural aspects like material, environmental issues, social set up, housing typologies, etc in and around Tilwari village.  

ToR for the Study Groups

Group 01:  Inventory Map

Should study and document the regional setting, spread and nature of villages, mapping based on building typology, age of building, height of buildings, activities, road network, vehicular movement pattern, pedestrian movement pattern, road sections etc. 

Group 2:  Water systems

Should study and document the watershed and its micro-watersheds.  Supply, storage and utilization of water at regional level, local level, community level, and at household level. Traditional and modern water storage methods.

Group 3: Waste management

Should study and document waste water and solid waste disposal methods at household level and community or at village level, techniques that they are using traditionally, current situation and problems related to same, to arrive at reuse and recycling potential. 

Group 4 and 5: Housing – traditional and modern

Should study and document housing typologies based on vernacular planning, construction and material. Positive and negative aspect of vernacular houses. Should study and document modern houses, its planning, construction and material, its positive and negative aspect.

Group 6: Livelihoods and economy

Should study and document the livelihood profile: primary occupations,  related transportation and ancillary requirements at community and at household level.

Group 7: Public buildings

Should study and document public buildings such as schools, health centres, community halls etc., their importance, connection with the community, material, construction techniques and details, location with respect to villages, utilization levels and potential etc.

Group 8: Environment

Should study and document environmental set up, location of jungle, flora and fauna around and inside villages, its importance in villagers life, traditions and culture. 

Tasks for each group will include:

  1. Carry out a field assessment and list key observations on (a) good things, (b) not so good things, and (c) ideas for new things
  2. Conduct interactions with local stakeholders including community members (users), local volunteers, office bearers, key informants. Try key informant interview and participatory rapid assessment tools. 
  3. Compile a map with supporting documents, including human interest stories
  4. Validate and discuss the findings and documentation with community, local stakeholders and faculty
  5. Produce final set of drawings and report as mandatory outputs, and audio-visual presentation, social media posts etc. as additional outputs that will earn extra points.
