A place for ideas that are still becoming

An incubation that asks what happens to knowledge when the conditions that produced it disappear. It rethinks food, language and craft in hill life, practised in Tilwari rather than kept in a museum.

Over the years, interns and volunteers from the village, from across India and from abroad have spent time here, in the garden, the kitchen, the café and the village. Their stories appear in Field Notes below.

An invitation to spend three months living on the campus as a small team, learning to live more lightly by building, growing and making things with your hands. Kaaya provides food and a place to stay. People from the village and invited practitioners come in from time to time to work alongside the team.

Who it is for: people drawn to sustainable architecture, interior design, community living, or simply making and mending, especially those who like to repurpose, recycle and reuse. You do not need to be an expert; you need to want to learn by doing.

What the team might work on:

• Finishing a mud house, with interiors made from reclaimed materials
• Landscaping with plants native to these hills
• Shaping shared living spaces on the campus
